The Mainspring

I just launched a new site, The Mainspring, which is dedicated to the clockpunk genre. I first heard of the genre through the blog Da Vinci Automata, which pretty much launched the whole thing.

Basically, clockpunk is steampunk with springs instead of steam and the Renaissance instead of the industrial revolution. It often describes an alternate history in which the industrial revolution actually happened during the Renaissance. If you know anything about my preferences regarding history and historical fiction, it won’t surprise you that the concept immediately appealed to me - in fact, I realized that a plot I’d been idly toying with had really been clockpunk all along.

The Mainspring collects resources, fiction, book reviews and links related to the clockpunk genre. I’ve spent the last couple days putting up content, but a lot of it still needs expansion. (Would be a weekend project if we actually, like, had actual weekends here.)

I cobbled the banner together myself from some sketches of Leonardo’s (and posted it a while ago, incidentally. I’m rather proud of it, especially of the gears in the skull).
